Hand Surgery - How to Choose a Good Hand Surgeon

Some people are born with disfigured, partial, and non functional hands; others are involved in accidents in which their hands are damaged. These people quickly realize how valuable hands are in everyday life. Not only can a disfigured hand be unattractive and socially awkward, for many people their hands are their means to support their families.

Fortunately for these people, amazing procedures have been developed to restore motion, sensation, and use of the wrist, and forearm. To benefit from these procedures a person must find a good doctor. So how do you choose a good professional? When choosing your doctor, ask yourself the following questions:

* Is he/she appropriately licensed and accredited? A hand expert can be an orthopedic, plastic or general surgeon, with additional training and focus on surgery of the hand, wrist and forearm. Some surgeons are members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and have undergone an additional full year of specialized training and passed a rigorous certification exam.

* Is he/she local? In most cases, when surgery is performed on arm additional procedures, physical therapy, and weekly or even daily visits may be necessary for an extended period of time. You will probably want to be within close proximity to your surgeon's office in order achieve the best results.

* Do they have experience in the procedure they are suggesting? You will feel more at ease knowing your surgeon has performed several successful surgeries just like yours. Your hands are crucial to your livelihood and you cannot afford to have mistakes made by a novice professional.

* What do his/her past patients say of their experience? Not everyone needs to see a hand surgeon, so it may be difficult to get a reference from a friend, but when you start searching for an expert, search online for personal references.

* Do you like him/her? Yes, it is important that they be qualified and experienced, but the professional you eventually work with needs to have a personality that you appreciate. In most cases you will be working with the surgeon and his staff for a long period of time and it is important that you get along and feel respected as a patient. You also need to feel comfortable with the procedures they are suggesting.

Finding a good hand surgeon to work with is worth researching. Your hands are valuable and deserve the best care available.
